Game On

Tonight is game 1 of the World Series and already proving to be one of the most fascinating post seasons in recent years. San Francisco came from 2-0 down to beat the hot favourite Cincinnati Reds in 5, then found themselves 3-1 down in a best of 7 against the reigning champions Cardinals before taking the series 4-3. That's 6 elimination games in a row they have won.

Tigers on the other hand took the Yankees 4-0 after making hard work of overcoming the A's (they were 2-0 up before winning 3-2). So, they're well rested and are starting game 1 with their top pitcher and some of the best hitters in baseball in Cabera and Fielder.

Giants on the other hand, are taking a necessary gamble on an inconsistent Zito on the mound and very erratic scoring. Should be a fascinating matchup, everything points to a Tigers win, but Giants just don't know when they are beaten. Print this post

Gav, I am resisting this one. It's been my fav ourite week of the sports calendar for so long. Our net connection is too poor for mlb.com and I resisted signing up to espn on sky for a month. I can't remember the last time I missed a series :-(

You said Fielder & Tigers and I instantly thought Cecil, all-star 91-93, ring 96 and 300 club for HR. Saw him play a fair few times against the Yankees. So I was blown away to find out his son Prince was signed by the Tigers this January to a 9 year deal.

Bit of a sore subject for me Tom.

Prince played for the Milwaukee Brewers for 7 years - batted as the cleanup hitter in the 4 slot behind Ryan Braun. He was one of the drivers to making the playoffs in 2008 and within a game of making the World Series in 2011. Braun and himself were amazing - set franchise records and he beat some of his father's season best numbers.

Unfortunately, with about 3 years to go on his contract, there was arbitration to agree salary and again for his final year. Brewers stance was that he was making massive demands for a long term contract, he reckoned he was undervalued.

Bottom line, he was a free agent at the end of 2011 and signed a 9 year $214 million contract with Detriot. At over $23 million a year, it is significantly more than the $15.5 he got in his final season with the Brewers.

I remember Cecil fondly - one of the reasons I got into baseball - in particular the 96 series. Would love to see jr. still in a Brewers uniform.
