Where Ireland are at

I had some texts with Colin in Christchurch after the last Irish match in the Six Nations, which Scotland won 23-20, thanks to a man of the match performance from Aussie Dan Parks.

Too be fair, that's about where Ireland are. An ok team that the likes of Scotland can take on a good day with a shit ref.

We'll see how they fair down here in June, we'll know where we are at then.

What an anti-climax to the season. Suddenly, France in Paris is no longer a blip - this was Scotland at home - we obviously learned little or nothing from previous close shaves. I thought it was a great game (for the neutral), and we certainly didn't deserve to win it - a forward pass for the first try, and dubious grounding for the second. Kidney looked really rattled in the interview afterwards, I've never seen him flustered like that. I think he has to shoulder some blame - Cullen stayed off. why?; he has a hooker on the bench he obviously hasn't faith in (barring injury to Best); our back row was being demolished but no Jennings; the timing of Sexton's replacement was terrible. Great balls by him to nail that kick before coming off. Hopefully he's not been too scarred by playing at this level.

Dave, well summed up. I saw the game intermittently but we were well beaten. I agree with the comment about Kidney: why not Cullen, why bother with Cronin if he is not going to be played? The line between success and failure is thin and we will learn a lot more by losing that match by three points than us having been the team to sneak it.
Imagine if O'Gara had kicked a winning penalty instead of Parks. We would be creaming ourselves about having a great bench and being so clever in using it. The stats about wining with less possession and territory etc in recent matches are very hollow now. I heard someone pundit last week saying that if the ball had bounced right for D'Arcy in Paris we could be going for a Grand Slam against the Scots. If ever I heard a "If my Auntie had b#lls ... story" - that was it.
Wales 2008 - 2010 shows how fragile success is, now we can be added as an example too.
