Philip Deignan wins a Grand tour stage

Philip Deignan won the 165km 18th stage at the Vuelta a España on 17 September. He becomes only the 5th Irishman to win a stage in a Grand tour after Elliot, Roche, Kelly and Earley, 17 years since the last, in the tour in 92 by Roche.

He has a while to go before he matches Sean Kelly 16 Vuelta a España stage wins, who won his first at 23 with Deignan now 26. Print this post

Noticed the Shay Elliot memorial in Wicklow for the first time over the weekend - was he the first Irishman in Le Tour? Which tours did he win stages in?

In 62 Shay Elliot came 3rd in Vuelta a España, winning a stage and was 2nd in the world championship. He was the first Irish man to wear the maillot jaune in 63, winning a stage and wearing the jersey for 3 days.

He shot himself at the age of 36.
